Happy Ours is a 1980 San Juan 28, hull number 182. I am the second owner and have owned her since 1995. She was completely stock with absolutely no modifications or upgrades when I bought her. I installed wheel steering in 1999 to free up room in the smallish cockpit. In 2000 I replaced the original OMC saildrive with a Volvo diesel and saildrive. She also got a new rudder at this time. Otherwise, she is pretty much original.
San Juans are some of the sweetest sailing production boats ever produced. San Juan 28s are moderately fast (PHRF ratings in the low 180s) and sail well in all wind conditions. It is easy to get her moving in less than 5 knots of wind and is also very fun to sail in 30 knots.
The cockpit is smallish, but the interior is spacious for this size boat.
